About Us

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a prestigious initiative of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, designed to assess and rank higher education institutions across the country. It provides a transparent, data-driven, and credible system for evaluating universities, colleges, and professional institutes based on various parameters of teaching, learning, research, and outcomes.

Since its inception, NIRF has transformed how institutions are perceived nationally and globally, helping students make informed choices and encouraging institutions to strive for excellence.

History

The National Institutional Ranking Framework was officially launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) (now the Ministry of Education) on 29th September 2015.

Before NIRF, there was no unified, objective system for ranking Indian institutions. Recognizing the need for accountability and competitiveness in higher education, the Ministry formed a core committee chaired by Prof. Surendra Prasad, former Director of IIT Delhi, to create an evidence-based ranking framework.

The first set of NIRF rankings was released in April 2016, covering universities, engineering, management, and pharmacy institutions. Over the years, NIRF has expanded its categories and refined its methodologies to align with international best practices.

Milestones:

2015: NIRF officially launched by MHRD.

2016: First-ever NIRF India Rankings released.

2017: Inclusion of “Overall Category” ranking for multidisciplinary institutions.

2018–2020: Addition of Dental, Medical, and Law categories.

2021–Present: Integration of data analytics, AI-based assessment, and online submission portals.
