In 1974, the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) was established with its headquarters in Mohanpur, Nadia. Over the course of its more than four decades in existence, this university has made a significant contribution to the growth of agricultural education, research, and extension. At first, the university had two distinct faculties, namely, Sciences of Agriculture and Animal Care Later, in 1980, the North Bengal campus of BCKV was built in Pundibari, Cooch Behar, to meet the needs of agricultural education and research in the northern part of West Bengal, where the agro-ecological characteristics are very different from those in South Bengal, where the university's main campus is.

The newly established university was bifurcating in 1995 to establish a new university, West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, separating out the faculty of Veterinary Sciences. During this time, the university was working on the gradual reconstruction of various campus facilities. With the establishment of Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya (UBKV) in 2001, it was further divided into two agricultural universities. It used the facilities of the former North Bengal Campus of B C K V and its other facilities in the districts of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, Malda, and North- and South-Dinajpur.
