Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is a public technical university located in Chennai (formerly named as Madras), Tamil Nadu, India. As one of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), it is recognized as an Institute of National Importance and has been consistently rated as one of India’s most prestigious universities. Founded in 1959 with technical and financial assistance from the former government of West Germany, it was the third IIT established by the Government of India.

Students of class XI and XII will also be admitted to pursue B.Sc. in Programming and Data Science program from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. Apart from college students, working professionals can apply for this program. This pioneering program of the institute is an unprecedented initiative launched in 2024-25 under which applications have been invited for the May 2024-25 phase.

The institute has made a unique effort to de-stress the students by giving them an opportunity to secure admission in IIT Madras while studying in school. Under this, IIT Madras has now allowed students from class 11 to apply in the qualifying process. Students who have completed Class XI by May 2024-25 or are currently studying in Class XII can apply in the May 2024-25 stage qualifying process and qualified candidates can start the program after completing Class XII.
The number of seats is not limited and hence all the candidates who qualify can take admission in the programme. Qualified candidates for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advance 2024-25 Exam can join this B.Sc program in May 2024-25. The last date to apply for this program is 20 April 2024-25. Interested students can apply online.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told the Lok Sabha that on the basis of the recommendations of the Expert Committee, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has proposed to amend the regulation regarding Open Distance Education (ODL) and Online Programs. Pradhan said that based on the recommendations of the Expert Committee, the UGC has proposed to amend the Open Distance Education (ODL) and Online Program Regulations.

He said that as per the proposed amendments, those with a minimum score of 3.26 on a four-point scale of the National Assessment and Affiliation Council (NAAC) or top 100 rankers under the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) at least twice in the three preceding cycles Autonomous colleges may be allowed to offer programs in online format without prior approval of the Commission.
The Minister informed that Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) can avail the services of Educational Technology Firms for the purpose of technical maintenance, teaching-learning platforms, advertising and marketing etc. Pradhan said that the proposed amendment has been put up on the website of the UGC to receive suggestions from various stakeholders.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) said eight deemed universities have shown interest in using the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores for admitting students to their undergraduate courses. These include Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and Jamia Hamdard, who have expressed their willingness to join CUET. UGC President M Jagadis Kumar held a meeting with the Vice-Chancellors and Directors of eight deemed universities that receive maintenance expenses from the UGC.

The UGC has advised students wishing to study in universities in China to be aware of the Corona related travel restrictions implemented by the neighboring country, saying that due to this many students have not been able to return there to continue their studies. The UGC also said that there has been no relaxation in restrictions and the Chinese authorities have said that the courses will be taught online. As per the rules, UGC and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) do not recognize such degree courses conducted only through online mode without prior permission, the public notice said.
