M.Tech Admission Process in IITs: What makes it different

In this article we will discuss the admission process of M.Tech in IITs. The admission of M.Tech in IIT is a different process due to eligibility requirements, selection process, and importance of exam.

Eligibility Criteria Required

The candidate who wants to pursue M.Tech in IITs should have BE/B.Tech with minimum 60% marks from recognized university. The candidate undergraduate specialization should be same to postgraduate specialization in which he wants to pursue.

Admission through GATE

Graduate Aptitude Test is common entrance exam for M.Tech in IITs. This test is conducted by Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Science every year. The IIT have their different cut off for GATE. The cut off for GATE vary according to categories such as General, SC, BC, OBC, and ST, etc. The General categories have high cut off as compare to other categories.

Direct Admission for Brilliant Students

• The students who completed their B.Tech from IIT can get direct admissions to some institutes. These students don’t require giving entrance exam or having lower cut off.
• The students who completed their B.Tech from Indian Institute of Science are also eligible for admission in IITs. It also depends on the policies of IITs.

Department Specific Process

The IITs and departments have their specific admission process after the GATE exam. Some institutes conduct written Test or Interview with GATE scores. Some IITs give admission on the basis of academic records.

Reservation Policies

• General Category has regular seats for admission in M.Tech.
• Some categories such as SC, BC, ST, OBC, and PwD have reserved seats for admission in M.Tech.
• The EWS candidates also get reserved seats for admission in M.Tech.

Dual Degree Programmes

In some IITs you can do dual degrees such as B.Tech + M.Tech.  You can do B.Tech and M.Tech in same specialization.

Institute Specific Admission Process

GATE is the common entrance exam for admission in M.Tech. But some institutes have different admission processes such as document verifications, counselling, and seat allocation.  Some IITs conduct their own seat allocation process and some IITs conduct centralized counselling and seat allocation.

Post Admission Requirements

After getting admission in IITs they require strict academic and research requirements. It involves both coursework and research and student have to do research work with the faculty for their thesis and research work projects. They focus on research and innovations.
