National Council for Teacher Education , Regulating Teacher Education in India

About Us

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is a statutory body of the Government of India established with the purpose of achieving planned and coordinated development of the teacher education system throughout the country. It is responsible for the regulation and proper maintenance of norms and standards in teacher education institutions.

NCTE operates under the Ministry of Education (MoE) and works to ensure that the nation’s teacher preparation programs produce competent, qualified, and professionally trained educators who can meet the evolving needs of India’s education system.

The Council's vision is to create a robust teacher education framework that empowers teachers to inspire learning, uphold values, and contribute effectively to national development.

History of NCTE

Before the 1990s, India faced serious inconsistencies in teacher training programs. Different states followed different norms, and the absence of a national regulatory body led to irregularities in quality and teacher preparation.

To address these issues, the National Council for Teacher Education Act was passed by the Parliament of India in 1993, and the NCTE came into force on 17th August 1995.

Initially, NCTE functioned as an advisory body under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) since 1973. However, with growing demand for a dedicated regulatory institution, it was granted full statutory authority in 1995.

Today, NCTE plays a pivotal role in setting teacher education standards, accrediting colleges, and ensuring accountability in teaching institutions across India.
