NIOS Application Process
NIOS is a short form of National Institute of Open Schooling. It is an official government organization that assists students in finishing their school education in an open and flexible manner. You need to apply online if you wish to join NIOS for Class 10th or Class 12th. Don't fret! The procedure is very straightforward.
Let us walk you through the NIOS application process step by step.
Step 1: Visit the Official NIOS Website
1. Open your web browser.
2. Visit the official website of NIOS: www.sdmis.nios.ac.in
3. This is Student Portal where you register and apply online.
Step 2: Click the "Register" Button
1. You will find a button on the homepage which reads "Registration" or "Register".
2. Click there to begin a new admission.
Step 3: Select Your Course
Now you will have two options:
Secondary
Senior Secondary
Select the class you wish to enroll in. Be sure that you are qualified:
For Class 10: You need to qualify Class 8.
For Class 12: You need to have passed Class 10 from a valid board.
Step 4: Enter Personal Details
Hereafter, you will come across a form. Fill it properly with your proper details:
Your Full Name
Date of Birth
Gender
Email ID
Mobile Number
Aadhaar Number
Address
Ensure the information is consistent with your documents.
Step 5: Choose Subjects
Now, select the subjects you wish to study.
For Class 10, select a minimum of 5 and maximum of 7.
For Class 12, also select 5 to 7 subjects, but one or two must be languages.
Select carefully! Select the subjects that you feel comfortable with and could assist you in further studies or in your career.
Step 6: Upload Mandatory Documents
Now you have to upload scanned copies (clear image or PDF documents) of a few documents:
For Class 10 Admissions:
Proof of birth date Birth Certificate or School Leaving Certificate
Pass certificate of Class 8 or self-declaration
ID proof Aadhaar Card, Passport, or any Govt. ID
Passport-size photo
For Class 12 Admissions:
Pass certificate of Class 10
ID proof (Aadhaar Card, Passport, etc.)
Recent passport-size photo
All the documents should be clear and legible.
Step 7: Select Study Centre
Next, pick you're AI or Study Centre. Here you can go for practical classes, send assignments, and seek assistance.
Select the closest or most convenient centre.
You can search by State, District, and PIN code.
Step 8: Check Your Application
Now, recheck all the details:
Personal details
Subjects
Documents
Study centre
If all seems good, move on to the next step. If there are any errors, correct them first.
Step 9: Pay the Fees
Let's pay the registration fee now.
NIOS Fee Structure (as of latest information):
For Class 10: Approximately 1800 to 2500 based on subjects
For Class 12: Approximately 2000 to 3000
Payment options:
Debit card
Credit card
Net banking
UPI
After payment, you will receive a receipt. Keep it safely.
Step 10: Confirmation and Reference Number
Once you pay the fee, your application is done. You will receive:
A Reference Number
A Confirmation Message or email
A Downloadable copy of the form
Save all these safe. You will require the reference number to view your admission status and download your ID card later.
Step 11: Wait for Document Verification
NIOS will verify your documents. This will take a few days.
If all is well, your admission will be granted.
If there's an issue, they will call or email you.
So, keep an eye on your registered email and mobile regularly.
Step 12: Admission Confirmed – Download ID card
When your admission gets approved, you will receive a NIOS Identity Card. You can: Download it from the student portal
Use it to sit for practicals or exams
Congratulations! You are officially an NIOS student
Important Dates
NIOS has two admission blocks during a year:
Block 1 April exams: Admission from March to September
Block 2 October exams: Admission from September to March
Apply in advance to avoid late fees.
If you fail to meet the deadline, you might have to wait for the next session.
