Following the promulgation of THE WEST BENGAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY ACT, 2001, in accordance with West Bengal Act XV of 2000, the University officially began operations on January 15, 2001, when the first Vice Chancellor assumed office. Through the affiliation of Engineering and Management Institutions / Colleges, the University began its academic program on July 16, 2001, in response to a Notification dated June 15, 2001 from the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal. It is now in its eighth year of operation. The university was awarded a grant from the UGC and is listed in Section 2F as well as Section 12B.

• The qualifying Master's degree examination, such as M.Sc./MCA/MBA or equivalent, must have received at least 55% marks or an equivalent CGPA for candidates to be admitted to the university's Ph.D. program. The following must be noted by candidates:
• SC/ST/OBC/Differently Abled candidates must have a minimum of 45% marks or an equivalent CGPA.
• Candidates who obtained their Master's degree prior to nineteen nighty one, may be granted a relaxation of 5% of their marks.

Following an enrollment interview and the Research Entrance Exam (RET) of the UGC, CSIR (JRF), NET, SLET, or Research Fellowship, selection will be made. A separate enrollment link can be used to apply directly for an enrollment interview for M.Phil, M. Tech., MD, or M. Pharm or equivalent exams. They are not required to participate in RET.
