Overview

The Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) is a branch of science that involves the use of clinical laboratory tests to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases. DMLTs are an important part of the healthcare system and play a critical role in disease diagnosis by collecting the information necessary to provide patients with adequate medical facilities. Without DMLT, modern medicine could not provide the correct treatment. This is a two-year course that exposes students to an in-depth knowledge of biochemistry, pathology, blood banking, and microbiology.

Objectives: Medical Laboratory Technology, also known as clinical laboratory science, is an allied health/paramedical profession, which is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease through the use of clinical laboratory tests. Doctors rely on laboratory technologies to detect, diagnose and treat diseases. The programmed covers the basics of preclinical subjects such as Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology and Blood Banking. Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT) do these tests by analyzing body fluids, tissues, blood typing, microorganism screening, chemical analyses, Cell counts of human body etc.

Job Prospects: After the completion of DMLT, you will find a challenging career in a hospital, minor emergency centers, private laboratory, blood donor centers, doctor’s office or clinics. DMLT Eligibility-

• Applicants must pass 10 + 2 and at least 45% 50% pass together with physics, chemistry, and mathematics/biology as compulsory subjects.
• Some institutions also offer the program to candidates with a 50% passing score (SSC).
• India DMLT has no age limit for admission.
• Candidates waiting for high school exams (also known as HSC scores) can also apply for DMLT courses.

DMLT Admission process

• In order to get admission, you must first go through an ample number of colleges available there. Make a list of the colleges to which you wish to apply. Go through their eligibility criteria. The eligibility criteria can be found on official college websites.
• If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for admission in case the college offers admission on a merit basis. Otherwise, you might have to sit for various common entrance tests conducted by different colleges. Some of these include NEET and JIPMER.
• If you clear the examination, the next step is to apply for admission to the college(s) you could crack with your entrance score.
