There is good news for the candidates who want to become Professor. As per the new guidelines notified by the University Grants Commission (UGC), universities and higher educational institutions will now be able to appoint eminent experts as faculty members under the Professors of Practice (POP) in Universities and Colleges category. For this formal educational qualification and publication requirements will not be mandatory. The scheme will not be open to those who are in teaching post, whether serving or retired.

As per the guidelines, "Persons who have expertise with at least 15 years of service or experience in their specific profession or role, shall be eligible for 'Professor of Practice'.

POPs are mainly non-tenured faculty members. Through this recruitment is done all over the world. In India also, POS are posted at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Madras and Guwahati. Similar placement is prevalent in many universities like:

As per the guidelines, the number of POPs in an Institution of Higher Education (HEI) at any point of time should not exceed 10 per cent of the sanctioned posts. The guidelines state that the maximum period of service in an institution should not exceed three years, which can be extended up to one year in exceptional cases.

1-Professors of Practice funded by industries.
2-Professors of Practice.
3-Professors of Practice on Honorary Basis.
“The appointment of Professors of Practice will be for a fixed period, excluding sanctioned posts. This will not affect the number of sanctioned posts and the recruitment of regular faculty members.
