In 1962, an Act of the Legislature of West Bengal established the University of North Bengal with the goal of "encouraging and providing for instruction for teaching, training, and research in various branches of learning and course of study;" to spread and advance knowledge, as well as to expand higher education to meet society's expanding requirements."

Master's degree with at least 55% marks on the qualifying exam in any field, including pharmacy, law, science, engineering, or commerce. The reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC and physically challenged candidates) receive a relaxation of 5%.

Candidates who have passed the UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR-NET, SLET, SET, or GATE examinations, as well as current faculty members, fellowship holders, or M.Phil. holders, are eligible to apply. The Entrance Test is waived for graduates with a minimum grade point average of 55 percent. However, they must take the interview or viva-voce portion of the entrance exam.
