The coming of Formal Education in the Khasi Hills has been rather recent. Formal education was first brought into the Khasi Hills in 1833 when three Schools were established at Cherrapunji by Alexander Lish, an American member of the Serampore Mission, that received the patronage of a Khasi, U Laithat, who was well read in Bengali.
