It is a missionary, charitable, and humanitarian institution.During the fourth centennial celebrations of Sri Adi Granth's installation at Golden Temple, former Chief Minister Sardar Parkash Singh Badal announced the establishment of a university devoted to the principles enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib.His dream came true when the Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University Act (Punjab State Act 20/2008) was passed by the Punjab Legislative Assembly. In July 2011, the SGGSWU began its first academic session.Additionally, the university has been granted membership in the AIU (Association of Indian Universities) with the Membership Number614.

Master's degree with a minimum of 55% in aggregate or an equivalent cumulative grade point average (CGPA) (50% in aggregate or an equivalent CGPA for SC/ST candidates, OBC (non-creamy layer), differently abled individuals with more than 40% disability, or candidates who obtained their master's degree prior to September 19, Nineteen ninety one or an equivalent degree from a recognized Indian or foreign university in the subject at hand or an allied subject).

• Admission will be founded on the entry test and interview.
• Candidates in the following categories may be exempt from taking the PhD program's entrance exam: Candidates who have passed the UGC-CSIR NET (JRF), NET, SLET (Punjab State), or GATE tests.The recipients of fellowships for teachers.
• Direct recipients of government fellowshipsOrganizations such as DBT, DST, ICMR, ICAR, INSPIRE, RGNF, and MANF (students appointed to projects sponsored by the aforementioned organizations are not exempt from the entrance test).

There will be two papers, each lasting 75 minutes, on the exam:

• Paper I: This is standard for all subjects.There will be 60 multiple-choice questions of an objective nature in this paper.General Aptitude, Reasoning, Numerical/Mental Ability, Indian Education System, Analytical Skills/Research Aptitude, Environment, Language Proficiency, Teaching Aptitude, and any other subject covered in Paper-I of the UGC-NET will be covered in this paper.
• Paper-II (For subject picked by the competitor) :There will be 60 multiple-choice questions of an objective nature in this paper.The paper will only cover the most important aspects of the subject or discipline in question.
