The Bengali word Bardhaman and the Sanskrit word Vardhamana are both anglicized in Burdwan. According to the Jain Kalpasutra, the twenty-fourth Jain Tirthankar, or Vardhamanswami, who spent some time in Astikagrama, is credited with the name's origin, which dates back to the sixth century BC. A second viewpoint asserts that this location represented a frontier colony of the advancement of aryanization through the upper Ganga valley by taking the literal meaning of the name, "a prosperous and growing center."
