What is a doctorate?

Duration of PhD in India

The duration of PhD is usually 3-5 years in full time and 5-6 years in part time mode. However, unlike under-graduation and post-graduation, PhD is a pure research degree. PhD Eligibility in India

Post-Graduation
Students must have at least 55% post-graduation. However, SC/ST/OBS/Specially Handicapped candidates must have at least 50% in post-graduation to apply for PhD programme. Preference is given to PhD applications for students with prior job experience in a similar field of interest.

Entrance Exam
There are some national entrance exams for admission to PhD program like CSIR-UGC-NET, GATE, UGC-NET etc. However, some universities conduct their own PhD entrance exam for admission followed by an interview round.

Interview
Some universities conduct the interview after the entrance test. Through which the students can get the details of the interview on the website of the concerned university/institute.

Experience
Students with prior job experience in a similar field of interest are given preference for PhD applications.
